Cambridge Graduation Photography: How to Make the Most of Your Big Day

Whether you are a graduand, a proud parent, or a family member trying to plan ahead, this guide covers everything you need to know about making the most of Cambridge graduation photography.

Cambridge University has specific rules about photography on graduation day, and understanding them in advance will save a lot of frustration.

Inside the Senate House: personal photography is not permitted inside the Senate House during the ceremony. Official photographs of the moment your degree is conferred are taken by the University’s contracted photographer and made available for purchase from the marquee immediately after your ceremony.

Studio photography: professional studio photography is available in the Combination Room of many colleges, with no booking required and instant proofs provided. Friends and family are welcome to join you in the studio.

The Senate House lawn: photography is permitted on the lawn following your ceremony. However, external commercial photographers are not permitted on the Senate House grounds: only you and your guests can photograph here.

The takeaway: the best graduation photography in Cambridge happens away from the Senate House grounds, on King’s Parade, through Senate House Passage, along The Backs, and in quiet college streets that are not subject to these restrictions.

Graduation day in Cambridge is logistically demanding. The city is packed, your timetable is fixed around the ceremony, and family members may be arriving from different directions. Planning the photography in advance takes one large source of stress off your plate.

Book early. Cambridge graduation photographers fill their diaries months in advance. If your graduation is in June or July, aim to book by February or March at the latest.

Communicate your timetable. Share your ceremony time, college, and any family lunch or dinner commitments so your photographer can plan a route and sequence accordingly.

Prioritise the morning light. If your ceremony is in the afternoon, consider a short morning session before the formality begins: lower crowds, softer light, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Gown hire can usually be arranged from the morning of the ceremony.

Include your whole family. Graduation photographs are as much for the people who supported your journey as they are for you. Build in time for proper family group portraits as well as individual shots in full academic dress.

Your academic dress (gown, hood and mortarboard) is the centrepiece of any graduation portrait, but what you wear underneath matters too. Tailored clothing in clean, neutral tones photographs beautifully. Avoid bold patterns or anything that will distract from the academic dress itself.

Bring:

• A lint roller, as gowns attract everything
• Comfortable shoes, as you will walk more than you expect
• A small bag for personal items that you can hand to a family member during shoots
• Any awards, certificates, or special items you would like included

Cambridge in late June and early July means long evenings and reliable golden hour light from around 8:00pm BST.
